Understanding geomorphology

Rivers are an essential component of our natural capital, yet they are under growing pressure from long-term ecological decline and the accelerating impacts of the climate crisis. Many upland rivers such as the Wooler Water have lost the natural roughness, woodland cover, and floodplain connectivity that once shaped their form and function. As a result, they now move water, sediment, and nutrients too efficiently downstream, creating simplified channels that rapidly respond to rainfall events,  support fewer species and store less carbon.

Public perception of what constitutes a “healthy” river is often based on a degraded baseline. Many people see the tree and scrub lined Wooler Water with its annual migration of salmon and sea trout as a thriving system, unaware that it continues to experience significant ecological and geomorphic stress. Over time, this shifting baseline has normalised poor river health and reduced expectations of what a truly functional river should look like. Unless this is challenged, society will continue to accept simplified, disconnected, and degraded rivers as the norm.
