About the Wooler Water

The Wooler Water catchment covers approximately 5,712 ha, with a total waterbody length, (including side streams) of 93 km. It lies across two distinct landscape types, the Border Uplands and the Cheviot Fringe. The Border Uplands form part of the Cheviot Hills and are defined by rounded hills, blanket bogs, moorland, and peatland habitats. These upland areas are primarily used for sheep and cattle grazing, although some areas are now managed for nature recovery and habitat restoration. The Cheviot Fringe, where the Wooler Water flows towards the River Till, features highly mobile rivers connected to their floodplains, ancient fens, bogs, moorlands, woodlands, and quarries, creating a diverse mosaic of habitats supporting rare plants, invertebrates, and wildlife.

The lower Wooler Water

This landscape combines agricultural land use (pastoral and arable farming) with ecologically rich habitats, contributing both to local livelihoods and to regional biodiversity and landscape character. The Wooler Water and its tributaries, the Harthope Burn and Carey Burns rise from the slopes of the Cheviot Hills, flowing through a varied upland and lowland landscape before joining the River Till below the town of Wooler, and ultimately feeding into the River Tweed (one of the most important freshwater ecosystems in Britain) near Coldstream.

The River Till and its tributaries are among the best rivers of their type in the UK, supporting a diverse range of plants and animals including vulnerable species such as the Atlantic salmon, the European otter, all three native lamprey species and a number of internationally important habitats. This rich and diverse natural heritage defines a river of exceptional ecological importance, formally protected through its designation as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and as part of the River Tweed Special Area of Conservation (SAC). SACs and SSSIs protect the UK and Europe’s most important natural habitats and species, preserving unique and often irreplaceable ecosystems. SACs form part of the Natura 2000 network, a Europe wide initiative to halt biodiversity loss, while SSSIs underpin national conservation efforts. Together, these designations help maintain biodiversity, support climate resilience, and protect natural heritage for future generations.
