Borders Tree Grant Scheme

Landscape tree planting in the Scottish Borders

The Borders Tree Grant Scheme funds the planting of individual, or small clumps of trees, which add landscape and biodiversity value to the Scottish Borders countryside – for the benefit of people, communities and wildlife. We are losing trees to disease and old age and we want to encourage people to plant more trees. Applications are invited from residents in the Scottish Borders local authority area only.

This project is supported by Scottish Forestry, Woodland Trust Scotland, Scottish Borders Council and private contributions, and is administered by Tweed Forum and Borders Forest Trust.

Who can apply?

The Project is open to any organisation or individual that can create a tree planting project, which is generally less than 0.25 ha (50 m x 50 m) in size, that will enhance the landscape and biodiversity of the Scottish Borders and make a contribution to improved public amenity. It is designed to be complementary to other natural heritage projects that have conservation or amenity aims. The scheme welcomes applications from land managers who are working to a long-term conservation plan. First time applicants will be prioritised over repeat applicants. Please note that hedges are not eligible.

What funding is available?

We can give assistance in two different ways to suit the specific project:

  • Up to 100% of material costs (i.e. for trees and appropriate shelters, guards, stakes, fencing, mulch mats, etc) for private applications from farmers, landowners and individuals (excluding labour and VAT, if reclaimable).
  • Up to 100% of materials and labour costs for non-profit making organisations such as schools and community groups (including VAT, if not reclaimable).

Please note the maximum grant available is £1,500 per applicant per year.

How do I apply?

Please ensure you have read our Application Guidance as well as our Planting Guide (Tweed Forum staff can give guidance and assist with planting design and species choice). Once you have read these documents, you can download the Borders Tree Grant Scheme application form. Please download and save the application form before sending electronically to info@tweedforum.org.

Before submitting your application, you should:
• Obtain the landowner’s consent, if you do not own the land that you wish to plant.
• Check for presence of services such as; gas, water pipes or telephone and electricity cables (tree planting should not be located within 10m of a powerline.)
• Obtain the approval of Scottish Borders Council if planting is proposed within 5m of the edge of a public road or highway or might impair road safety.
• Check for any existing planning restrictions or site designations such as those relating to archaeology.
