The Border Schools Birdbox Project aimed to supply every primary school within the Scottish Borders with 10 birdboxes over a four year period.
With funding secured for years 1 and 2, the birdboxes were built and distributed by St. Mary’s School (Melrose) teacher Tom Rawson in partnership with Tweed Forum. Tom is also known for his work coordinating the “Great Borders River Clean” and as the 2019 Tweed Forum River Champion, and we were delighted to work with him on this fantastic project.
Funded by the Nineveh Charitable Trust, the project is an opportunity to bring the countryside into the playground, enabling schoolchildren to enjoy and better understand the region’s birdlife. The birdboxes will be supported by appropriate teaching resources and each participating school will be responsible for caring for and monitoring the boxes in their playground.
The programme also includes a batch of boxes to be erected along the Tweed to provide nesting habitat for grey wagtails and Eurasian dippers. Each birdbox will be mapped and monitored using our GIS data mapping system.
