Essential restoration work on one of the Scottish Borders’ most iconic landmarks, the 31 ft William Wallace statue at Bemersyde near Melrose, has taken place thanks to a £3,210 grant from the Fallago Environment Fund and local donations.
Erected in 1814 near Dryburgh by the 11th Earl of Buchan, the statue is a lasting tribute to Scotland’s legendary freedom fighter and remains popular with both locals and visitors alike. The passage of time had taken its toll however, with Wallace’s iconic stone claymore suffering significant weathering, necessitating urgent repairs.
Thanks to support from the Fund, specialist stonemasons were commissioned by statue owner, The William Wallace Trust, to restore the sword and help preserve the monument for generations to come.
